It is almost impossible in this day and age of new gadgets and amazing inventions to not know of the MP3 player. These popular little music machines allow you to carry thousands of songs in your pocket. Maybe you or one of your friends has one.

MP3 technology means that music files can be made smaller without losing any significant sound quality. MP3 is the shortened name of MPEG-1 Layer III, or MPEG Audio Layer III. Huge advancements in MP3 technology have been made and now some MP3s allow you to view photos, watch videos, make recordings and store addresses in your MP3 player.

Fraunhofer Gesellschaft was the first company to start experimenting with the possibilities of the MP3. Development started in 1987 and the first MP3 tracks and MP3 players were available in January 1999.

A step up from portable Walkmans, Discmans and mini disk players, MP3 has become the most popular form of mobile music. Because of this surge in popularity, many Internet sites have appeared, allowing people to download music for free (though illegally). The most frequented download site is the legal iTunes, to be used with the Apple iPod. The iPod is the highest selling and most well-known MP3 player in the world. Other well-known MP3 brands include iRiver, Sony and Creative Labs.
